The International Dyslexia Association has compiled a Spelling Fact Sheet regarding spelling instruction. It explains what the scientific research says regarding the way children learn to spell. Spelling instruction should ALWAYS be linked to reading instruction. Children who struggle, need explicit instruction that is carefully sequenced. Otherwise, they will become confused and the spelling will not stick much beyond test day.
Below is a PDF file of IDA's fact sheet, along with our comments which explain how Orton-Gillingham instruction follows these exact procedures. The comments emphasize the specific program of Barton Reading and Spelling, yet would apply to any TRUE Orton-Gillingham based program.
Some programs claim they are Orton-Gillingham "based," yet have very loosely applied some of the principles. If you want to know whether or not the program you are using or considering to use with your child is really Orton-Gillingham, feel free to contact us.
